Winterpills: The Light Divides
Daytrotter is finishing up a progressive review of Winterpills' latest album, The Light Divides. With four of the five "days" of review completed, calling it, "a specimen of near-perfect musical pacing. Slow, low-lit songs will gently paw at you between the more aggressive tunes until they have your full attention."
The Light Divides is the second Winterpills album, released on February 27 through Signature Sounds, promoted through Fanatic New Media. The band is based out of Northampton, Massachusetts, and claim The Innocence Mission, Stars, Elliott Smith, Sam Beam, Neil Young, among many others, as their musical influences. Winterpills has six members, Dennis Crommett on electric guitar, Dave Hower on drums, Philip Price on vocals and acoustic guitar, Fora Reed on vocals and keyboards, Brian Akey on bass, and Jose Ayerve on bass.
Their music, first recorded in Flora Reed's home studio, does have that, "you already know these tunes, but are simultaneously aware that you have never heard them before" sound, as their bio claims. Their vocals are layered with harmonies, and hooks that hit gently and refuse to leave. Fans of indie-rock's softer sides will want to acquaint themselves with The Light Divides.
Flora Reed mentions, "Our original idea for the first album was to casually record some demos at my house, but before we knew it we were making a full-length record. We were able to go a lot further with this one. You'll find some unexpected arrangements and more backwards guitar than you might expect to hear from us. There's a lot you won't catch on initial listens that hopefully, will tap you on the shoulder later."
