The Curtains release Calamity

The Curtains released their fourth album, Calamity, this week. The album was written and self-produced by Chris Cohen (Deerhoof, Natural Dreamers) without a band or support from a record label, as Asthmatic Kitty came on board after the album was completed. On Monday, Spin tagged them "Artist of the day", saying "Calamity is best listened to with headphones; its subtle complexity reveals itself slowly over successive listens."

Asthmatic Kitty describes the sound of The Curtain's Calamity:
"The enigmatic mood and seemingly unfounded optimism of The Curtains' music have never been so sharply contrasted, and the sounds and playing have never been so uncompromisingly personal and eccentric. Casually veering from melodic pop ballads ("Go Lucky" and "Old Scott Rd.") to unclassifiable stylistic mish-mashes ("Invisible String" and "Calamity") to unabashed bubble-gum and garage punk ("Green Water" and "Fell On a Rock") to mysterious and brooding art-song ("Roscomare"), Calamity continues The Curtains' project of poker-faced genre disobedience."
